Bayside Neighborhood

Bayside, a friendly neighborhood bounded by Washington and Franklin streets, is located on the downslope of Munjoy Hill. Living in Bayside of Portland is convenient because the housing, workplaces, services, transportation, recreation, dining places and shopping centers are within the comfortable walking distance.
The area of the Bayside neighborhood was first developed as a street network in the early 19th century. By the 1820s the area was Portland’s second seaport via the Back Cove’s ship channel and in the 19th century it was a mix of residential, commercial and industrial uses. Bayside provided a home for recent immigrants with large population of Irish, Scandinavians, and Italians in the late 19th century and over 250 American families settled in the neighborhood in the early 20th century. Today, Bayside has become home to new immigrants including Cambodians, Vietnamese, and most recently, Sudanese, Somalis and Iraqis.
Bayside is an emerging nexus of local food producers, brewers, artisans, and eco-entrepreneurs. Whether you are looking for local beverages or hearty dinner, this is the kind of the place for you to flock to.
If you are interested in art, don’t miss visiting Running with Scissors in Bayside, a diverse art studio facility including gallery, classroom, artist lounge, photo studio and 3000 sf Clay Center. It is a dedicated work space for 50+ resident artists and access to shared workspace and equipment for 12-20 associate artists.
For a relaxing evening, head to Bayside Bowling-a great place to hang out, hear some local music (Lars Vegas and DRU on the last visit), enjoy hearty dinner and bowl. A kitschy spot popular with locals is Rockin’ Ricky’s Tavern - they have different theme nights (and karaoke!). For more of an upscale evening out, don't miss the Portland institution Back Bay Grill - James Beard award winning chef Larry Matthews cooks out of this world, locally sourced dishes 6 days a week.
